Format

Every Leagues Cup match is guaranteed MLS vs. Liga MX. Same structure as 2025, expanded to four games in Mexico for the first time.
Phase One

Aug 4 – 13

36 teams split into 18 regional trios (one from each tier per league). Each club plays 3 games, all against the opposite league. 54 matches total across Matchdays 1–3.

Standings

Two Tables

MLS and Liga MX clubs are ranked in separate league tables by Phase One points. Top 4 from each table (8 total) advance to the knockout rounds.

Knockouts

Aug 25 – Sep 6

Fixed bracket, MLS-vs-Liga MX only: MLS1–LMX4, MLS2–LMX3, MLS3–LMX2, MLS4–LMX1. QFs Aug 25–27, SFs Sep 1–2, 3rd place & Final Sep 6.

Stakes

3 CCC Berths

Both finalists plus the 3rd-place winner qualify for the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. The Leagues Cup champion gets a direct bye to the Round of 16.

3 pts — win in regulation
2 pts — win on penalties

Methodology

Each side’s expected goals for a matchup are computed as:

λ_home = (Attack_home × Defense_away ÷ League Avg xG90) × Home Advantage
λ_away = (Attack_away × Defense_home ÷ League Avg xG90) × Away Factor

League Avg xG90 is set to 1.48 (the blended MLS/Liga MX combined-season average). Home advantage is a 1.12× multiplier on the host club’s expected goals and a 0.94× discount on the traveling club’s; both are set to 1.0 for neutral-site games. Final scoreline probabilities come from independent Poisson distributions over λ_home/λ_away (0–6 goals), with the “no draws” shootout modeled as a 50/50 coin flip applied to the regulation-draw probability mass.

League factor

Before any of the above, every club’s raw base xG90/xGA90 gets a league-strength adjustment applied separately to attack and defense: Liga MX xGF ×1.035 (+3.5%) and xGA ×0.965 (−3.5%); MLS xGF ×0.985 (−1.5%) and xGA ×1.015 (+1.5%). Each league’s two halves are sized so they sum to the intended combined swing — a 7% swing for Liga MX, 3% for MLS — reflecting the view that Liga MX clubs, drawn from a deeper/older league with heavier continental hardware, tend to outperform what same-league-only xG comparisons suggest against MLS opposition, and vice versa. Change LEAGUE_XGF_FACTOR / LEAGUE_XGA_FACTOR in the source to test other assumptions.

Squad-value factor

On top of the league factor, each club gets a second multiplier based on where its Transfermarkt-implied squad value ranks against all 35 other clubs in the field (not just its own league) — from 0.92× at the bottom of the pool to 1.08× at the top, linear by rank, applied to attack (multiply) and defense (divide) the same way as the league factor. The idea: a club that’s dramatically outspent its group, or is being dramatically outspent, probably over/underperforms its raw xG sample by a bit — spend is an imperfect but real signal of squad depth and quality that a partial-season xG number doesn’t fully capture. The Power Ratings table above shows both multipliers (Lg×, Val×) alongside the raw and adjusted numbers so you can see exactly what each one did.

Why Liga MX’s base rating is now full-season xG, not a squad-value proxy

MLS’s 2026 season is deep enough (17–19 games per club through Aug 2) that season-long xG/xGA is a reliable signal on its own. Liga MX’s Clausura 2026 is only 2–3 games old as of kickoff, so raw early-season xG alone is extremely noisy — a club like Necaxa (2.44 xG/90 through 2 games) is not sustainably one of the best attacks in the region. Earlier versions of this model corrected for that with a squad-value-implied prior. That’s now been replaced with something better: a real, complete 18-team xG/90 table for the combined 2025-26 season (Apertura 2025 + Clausura 2026, 34–44 games per club depending on Liguilla run) via FootyStats. Each club’s base rating is 75% that full-season number, 25% its early Clausura 2026 form — real data on both sides of the blend, weighted toward the far larger sample. As the current Clausura sample grows, that weighting should shift further toward live 2026 form.

Liga MX base xG90 = 0.25 × (early Clausura 2026 xG90) + 0.75 × (FootyStats 2025-26 combined xG90)
Liga MX base xGA90 = 0.25 × (early Clausura 2026 xGA90) + 0.75 × (FootyStats 2025-26 combined xGA90)

One proxy remains: Atlante FC has no Liga MX playing history of its own yet, having acquired Mazatlán FC’s registration for 2026-27. Atlante’s full-season anchor uses Mazatlán’s actual 2025-26 xG/90 (1.16 / 1.88) as the closest available stand-in.

Read this before betting on it: MLS-side numbers are high-confidence, full-season, single-source. Liga MX-side numbers are now built on a real, complete 18-team full-season xG table rather than a squad-value guess — a meaningful upgrade — but they’re still a two-source blend rather than a single clean feed, and Atlante’s number is a same-league proxy rather than its own history. The squad-value factor (previous section) still applies on top of this new base rating for both leagues, so a club that is dramatically over- or under-valued relative to the field gets an additional small nudge beyond its blended xG. The full 54-game Phase One schedule and all six sets are now confirmed and locked into the model — the tournament simulator’s remaining uncertainty is genuine match-outcome variance, not schedule guesswork. Update the xG inputs once a deeper Clausura 2026 sample is public, and re-run before leaning on this for stakes.

Power Ratings

Attack/defense ratings in expected goals per 90 minutes (xG90 / xGA90), all 36 clubs ranked together by adjusted net rating (Adj. xGD90 = xG90 − xGA90). Two adjustments sit on top of each club’s raw base xG: a league factor, applied separately to attack and defense (Liga MX xGF +3.5% / xGA −3.5%; MLS xGF −1.5% / xGA +1.5%), and a squad-value factor (±8% based on where a club’s Transfermarkt-implied market value ranks against the other 35 clubs in the field). MLS base xG is full 2026 season data (17–19 games/club) — blue. Liga MX base xG blends FootyStats’ completed 2025-26 season xG (34–44 games/club) with early Clausura 2026 form — red — see methodology below for the split.
Raw xG90 (blended base) → × League Factor → × Squad-Value Factor → Adjusted xG90 (xGA90 divided by the same two factors). MLS: full-season xG/xGA, 2026 MLS regular season (through Aug 2). Liga MX: 75% FootyStats’ completed 2025-26 season xG/90 (34–44 games/club, all 18 teams) + 25% OddAlerts early Clausura 2026 xG (2–3 games/club) for current-season form. Atlante’s full-season figure uses Mazatlán FC’s 2025-26 numbers as a proxy — Atlante acquired Mazatlán’s Liga MX registration for 2026-27.

Tournament Simulator

A full Monte Carlo run of the entire competition — Phase One round-robins, both league tables, the QF/SF/Final bracket — repeated thousands of times using the power ratings above and the hosting rules from Round 03. Output: how often each club reaches the knockouts, the semis, the Final, and wins it all.
4,000 trials · not yet run
All six Phase One “sets” (3 MLS + 3 Liga MX clubs playing a round robin) are confirmed from the official schedule — nothing here is guessed or randomized. The only randomness across trials is match outcomes themselves (final scores, and shootout coin flips on regulation draws), sampled from each matchup’s Poisson distribution — so the spread you see reflects genuine result variance, not schedule uncertainty.

Fixture Projections

All 54 confirmed Phase One matches, organized chronologically by matchday, with the model’s projected scoreline for each (not just a win %) — home-field advantage included, per the hosting rules in the Format tab.

Phase One hosting

50 of 54 Phase One games are hosted by the MLS club (1.12× attack / 0.94× discount applied to the traveling side). Four games flip that — confirmed Mexico-hosted fixtures:

  • Toluca vs. Seattle Sounders — Aug 5, Estadio Nemesio Díez
  • América vs. San Diego FC — Aug 6, Estadio Azteca
  • Tigres UANL vs. Vancouver Whitecaps — Aug 11, Estadio Universitario
  • Toluca vs. FC Dallas — Aug 12, Estadio Nemesio Díez

Knockout stage hosting

Per Leagues Cup organizers, every knockout match — quarterfinals, semifinals, third place, and the Final — is hosted at the MLS club’s venue. That home-field edge for the MLS side is baked into the Round 04 tournament simulator below for every knockout game.
